Navigation

iRobot Roomba 675
Intelligent and good-looking. The svelte circular body of the iRobot Roomba contains “iAdapt navigation sensors.”. These multiple sensors guide the vacuum around obstacles and under furniture to ensure your whole house enjoys a thorough clean. The built-in drop sensors also stop your robot from taking a tumble down the stairs or over a ledge.

Carefully placed ‘bump sensors’ allow your robot to bump off any obstacles that fall outside the navigation sensors. These carefully placed pressure sensors will not stop the vacuum from pushing past drapes or soft-furnishings.

Clean your floors thoroughly with the iRobot ‘dirt sensor’ which senses a particularly dirty area and spends more time cleaning this spot.

SHARK R85

Your iRobot is also smart enough to come home on time. When the battery charge is low, your Roomba 675 will automatically return to the charging base for a full recharge and be ready for the important business of cleaning at its next scheduled appointment.

SHARK ION Robot Vacuum R85
With its stealthy circular body, the Shark Ion R85 is also a winner in the good-looks department. Designed with the ‘Smart Sensor Navigation 2.0’ this is an incredibly clever little robot. It has many of the same features as the Roomba 675 with multiple sensors to avoid obstacles, bump and drop sensors to avoid stairs, ledges and obstacles.

The Shark Ion will also return home to recharge when it has a low battery.

Conclusion: Both the Shark Ion R85 and the Roomba 675 have excellent navigation systems and will clean your house thoroughly. The iRobot Roomba does have the advantage of a dirt sensor- causing it to spend more cleaning time on difficult areas.

Power and Glory

iRobot Roomba 675
Powered by a Lithium Ion battery with a capacity of 1800 mAh. The Roomba 675 delivers 600 Pa of suction power and is capable of cleaning 1615 square feet on a single charge. A single charge will give approximately 90 minutes of cleaning time, and the recharge will take approximately 120 minutes.

SHARK ION Robot Vacuum R85
The real breakthrough in the design of the Shark Ion R85 is the extra suction it has been able to extract from its motor. Using a similar Lithium Ion battery to the iRobot, the Shark Ion can extract a suction power of 1400 Pa – this is a startling breakthrough in suction power up to three times the suction of previous Shark robot models.

It has a running time of approximately 60 minutes on a full charge and will take approximately 3 hours to recharge.

Conclusion: Both these robot vacuums have the power to fulfill their cleaning purpose. The Roomba has a slightly larger cleaning area mostly due to its slightly longer cleaning time per-charge. For sheer power and the glory of extra suction, it is hard to go past the Shark R85. This extra power makes it an excellent choice for pet-owners or those with extra plush carpets.

Overall Design

iRobot Roomba 675
With a circular design and a thin black profile measuring 13.4 x 13.4 x 3.5 inches the Roomba 675 is a machine that looks good cleaning your floor. It has a dustbin which should allow you up to three full cleaning cycles before you need to empty it.

With multi-surface brushes and edge brushes, it will sweep and vacuum all areas of your home. With smartphone and wifi connectivity it offers you the ability to pre-programme your cleaning or start your cleaner remotely. Your Roomba 675 uses AeroVac, High-Performance filtration which is equivalent to HEPA filtration.

SHARK ION Robot Vacuum R85
Grey like its namesake the Shark Ion is a scintillating circular design measuring 12.6 x 12.6 x 3.4 inches and will look good prowling across your floor. With a 600 ml dustbin, it will hold about three standard cleaning cycles before emptying is required.

With full HEPA filtration, it will remove even the tiniest particles. Smartphone apps and wifi connectivity mean you can pre-programme your robot or run it remotely. The self-cleaning brush-roll with the additional edge and corner brushes mean it will give your floors a thorough clean.

Conclusion: The vacuum cleaner design experience of iRobot and Shark are evident in both these models, and they both have the features that you require in a robot vacuum – plus some well-thought-out extras.

The Shark has a slightly smaller profile which may be useful if you have low slung furniture or fittings.

Shark or iRobot

The pedigree of Shark and iRobot are not in question, and both the robot vacuums attest to this fact. Either vacuum would be a good choice for your cleaning needs. If you have a large area that requires standard levels of cleaning – then the iRobot Roomba 675 with 90 minutes of cleaning time and dirt sensor technology is a good choice.

For those with a smaller area but more debris from pets, or if you have extra plush furnishings, then you cannot go past the extra power that the Shark R85 delivers. This startling suction really does lift the dirt.
