Out of all the carpet cleaners made by Hoover, the FH53000PC SmartWash Pet Automatic Carpet Cleaner has to be the most futuristic model of them all. It sports a wide range of state-of-the-art features that you won’t find in many carpet cleaners or shampooers, even among the Hoover family. Join us as we take a closer look at what the SmartWash carpet cleaner has to offer.

Trigger-Less Design and Automatic Cleaning
Don’t be confused by the trigger-less design of the SmartWash’s handle—Hoover did that intentionally to showcase its amazing automatic cleaning technology.
The SmartWash is able to dispense a tiny quantity of carpet cleaning solution automatically whenever you push the unit forward. When you draw it back, it automatically stops spraying the solution on your floors and activated drying/suction mode. You can also activate dry-only mode with a simple press of a button on the floorhead.
Our only gripe with such a system is that it tends to dispense an insufficient amount of cleaning solution whenever you push it forward. So, while several customers and we appreciate the automatic cleaning system, it does tend to make carpet cleaning a bigger chore than it needs to be.

Stain Remover Wand
Something that never ceases to amaze us is the removable handle that that doubles as a carpet pre-treating spray wand. The stain remover wand detaches from the SmartWash’s neck, allowing you to take it anywhere and spray the pre-treating solution on set-in stains for easier removal.
The stain remover wand comes with its own tank, which you need to fill with your go-to pre-treating solution. Or you can give the included trial-size bottle of Hoover’s pre-treating stain solution a try and see how you like it.
HeatForce Carpet-Drying Technology
Other than the SmartWash’s incredible suction, it relies on HeatForce Technology to leave your floors dry in under 30 minutes after a deep-cleaning session. HeatForce blows warm air into your carpet to evaporate moisture more quickly than traditional heating systems. You’ll need to manually activate HeatForce whenever you use the dry-only mode function on your SmartWash.

1-Gallon Tank Capacity
It might not look it, but the SmartWash is actually sporting a one-gallon capacity split between the two water tanks. Based on customer reports, one gallon of your go-to carpet cleaning solution is all it takes for the SmartWash to clean over 500 square feet of carpets and upholstery.
As is typical of any carpet cleaner, the dirty water tank is slightly smaller than the clean water tank since the SmartWash’s suction can never completely remove 100% of moisture from your floors. While this upright is intelligent in a sense, it sadly doesn’t come with an auto-shutoff feature that kills the motor when the dirty water tank has reached max capacity. This means that if the dirty water tank ever gets full, there’s a real risk of it spurting contaminated water everywhere.

12-Foot Attachment Hose with FlexForce Power Tool
Like any great carpet cleaner, the SmartWash comes with a suction hose where you connect above-ground cleaning tools. The SmartWash’s suction hose measures 12 feet in length, giving you a wide range of movement without having to tow around the upright carpet cleaner.
The SmartWash only comes with a single cleaning tool—the FlexForce Power Pet Tool—which is all you need clean upholstery, carpeted steps, auto interior, mattresses, and much, much more. The Pet Tool uses FlexForce brushes, identical to those found in the floorhead, to reach deep into fibers and destroy old stains in just a few passes. The brush roll within the Pet Tool is motorized and provides a deeper clean than any air-driven brush roll could achieve.
Detachable Nozzle and Brush Roll
When all is said and done, you’ll need to get rid of any filth that’s stuck inside the transparent nozzle and between the FlexForce Brush Roll’s bristles. You can do this by removing the plastic nozzle cover and pulling out the brush roll.

Past customers suggest doing this after every cleaning session as it reduces the risk of cross-contamination. This removable nozzle and brush roll system makes it a lot easier to maintain your SmartWash since all you have to do is rinse the two components in running water to make them ready for a second round of carpet cleaning.
Verdict: Intelligent, Feature-Packed, and Top-Notch Performance
There are definitely a few things about the Hoover SmartWash that need to be addressed, but overall, it’s one of the smartest, top-notch upright carpet cleaners that comes with more bells and whistles than most.
It’s not 100% perfect by any means, but as a carpet cleaner that offers deep-cleaning action and accelerated drying times, combined with the game-changing stain remover wand, we can see this unit being a must-have for most households with pets and children.
