Want to hear something that’ll shock you to your very core? The US Environmental Protection Agency discovered that in certain places, indoor air quality can be five times as polluted as the air outside. You might be thinking that keeping your windows and doors shut for most of the day should bring that down to a more tolerable level, but you’re just fooling yourself. Every crack into your home is an entrance for microscopic pollutants to wreak havoc on your lungs and sinuses.
So what can we do about it? Well, you could seal your entire home in cling wrap, or you make the more reasonable decision by investing in an air purifier. These neat appliances inhale the raw air in a room and trap any microscopic particles in the process. In the end, they exhale clean, breathable air for you to enjoy at home or in the office.

What about Dust Mites?
Well, what about dust mites – those microscopic, translucent, itch-causing mites that get congregate in dust piles and on beds and furniture? Those who suffer from an allergic reaction to dust mites need to get them out of the house as soon as possible. Symptoms of a dust mite allergy include inexplicable coughing, swelling under the eyes, runny noses, and nasal congestion.
Dust mites can be found in every home and apartment, but they thrive in dirty environments by feeding on dust, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Essentially, you’ll never be able to reduce the number of dust mites in your home without cutting off their food source.
You might be happy to learn that air purifiers don’t just trap dander, pollen, and dust from outdoors, but they also help in ensuring that dust mites that originate from within the comfort of your home are dealt with in a harsh but necessary way.
True HEPA Filters: Your Best Friend against Dust Mites
When searching for an air purifier that will help in getting rid of dust mites, not any random model will do. The size, design, and fan speed of an air purifier is the dealer’s choice, but you should take a particularly close look at what sort of filter the appliance comes with.
There are several different types of filters to choose from, but to handle a dust mite infestation appropriately, the only effective filter is a True HEPA Filter (not HEPA-grade or HEPA-style). The average dust mite measures in at between 200 and 300 microns in diameter. A True HEPA Filter can trap particles and microscopic organisms as small as 0.3 microns in size with the effectiveness of 99.97%.
Even if you don’t suffer from dust mite allergies, there are several reasons why a True HEPA Filter would be of great benefit. For instance, these filters trap airborne pet dander, pollen, and cement/wood dust. Any homeowner living with pets or nearby a construction site or who has a garage woodshop should seriously consider getting a HEPA air purifier at home.
However, certain models lack a True HEPA Filter that are designed to handle dust mites, their eggs, and their nasty waste. As long as their filters can trap particles of at least 300 microns – e.g. has a super-fine mesh filter – then you should be good to go. Just note that the filter may not be designed to handle other airborne debris like cement dust, sawdust, or pet dander.
Kill Bacteria and Dust Mites with UV Lights
If you’re feeling a bit unfriendly towards unwanted microscopic guests, then you should get an air purifier that shoots out fatal beams of UV lights at invisible organisms plaguing your home. Many air purifiers have an optional UV-C germicidal light that burns bacteria, dust mites, and dust mite eggs to a char before trapping them in the filter. When emptying or disposing of the filter, the risk of any surviving dust mites making it back onto your floors and in your furniture cushions is significantly reduced.
Multiple Filters for Improve Air Purifying
The great thing about air purifiers is that most modern models aren’t just a one-filter pony. They can come equipped with multiple filters for multiple levels of air cleaning.
Living with a smoker or around a smoker can leave a lingering scent of tobacco and overall grossness, but with a charcoal filter, cigarette and cigar odors can disappear almost instantaneously. This type of filter is also great to have if you’re an aspiring chef who ends up burning more meals than eating them.
Another fantastic filter to think about is an electrostatic filter. By harnessing the amazing power of static electricity, the air purifier will charge the air surrounding the unit and any unfortunate particles of dust, allowing the dust to cling to the filter without letting go. The best thing is that these filters are usually reusable by running it under warm water and wiping it clean with a cloth.
Other Factors to Consider
Finding the right air purifier isn’t just about knowing whether it can get rid of dust mites and odors. Air purifiers are built with different things in mind.
Area Coverage Capacity
Firstly, the coverage capacity of the air purifier needs to be able to handle the size of the room you plan on placing the unit in. Too large a unit and you might end up spending more on electricity than you’d like. Too small and you might as well use the device as an expensive but flashy paperweight.
Since air purifiers need to run for hours on end, or possibly all day long depending on how polluted your home’s air is, you’ll want to find the most energy-efficient model. Your safest bet would be to get an ENERGY STAR certified air purifier. ENERGY STAR products use less energy, thereby producing less waste and less damage to our lovely environment. Even if you have the extra cash lying around to pay a large utility bill, consider helping the environment by getting an ENERGY STAR air purifier.
Also, if you’ve ever owned an air purifier, humidifier, dehumidifier, air conditioner, or other household appliance that helps increase the comfort levels of your home, convenience is of the utmost importance. It can be annoying having to babysit a device to ensure that it doesn’t run longer than it needs.
To help you with this impossible task, many great air purifiers come with remote controls, Wi-Fi connectivity, sleep timers, smart sensors, and auto-mode. Air purifiers typically have one or several of these features available, so take some time to figure out which of them will benefit you and your comfort the most.
Top 10 Best Air Purifiers for Dust Mites
You didn’t think we’d leave you hanging with the general knowledge of getting rid of dust mites without suggesting a few air purifiers, would you? Here, we’ll talk about the ten best air purifiers that work exceedingly well at eliminating dust mites from the air and your home.
10) LEVOIT LV-H132 Air Purifier
The LEVOIT LV-H132 is a 3-speed, compact air purifier with great performance in small-sized rooms. This unit purifies the air in a room using a three-stage process. First, the suctioned air passes through a pre-filter for trapping large airborne debris. It then makes its way past a True HEPA Filter which finer, microscopic pollutants like pet dander and dust mites. Finally, to get rid of odors, the twice-filtered air goes through a carbon filter. The first two filters work extremely well, but the final odor-eliminating carbon filter is much too thin to be reliable, even in small, enclosed spaces.
The LV-H132 has a limited coverage capacity of only 129 square feet. This device could be used in larger rooms like living rooms or kitchens, but it’ll have to be turned on at its maximum speed, and even then there’s no guarantee that it’ll make a noticeable difference to the room’s air quality. However, when placed in smaller areas like a bedroom or home office, clean, breathable air is guaranteed. The LV-H132’s CADR ratings are 110 for dust, pollen, and smoke.
One of the LV-H132’s key features is its nightlight with two brightness settings. Switching brightness modes requires manually tapping the light bulb icon. The lights can also be turned off when not needed. It makes for a handy little nightlight if you or your child is afraid of nighttime monsters.
Apart from the light bulb icon, the control panel on the cover of the unit also has the fan’s preset speed settings and a filter indicator which lets you know when the filters require changing. The average lifespan for all three filters is roughly six months with all-day usage.
The LV-H132 is an excellent air purifier but should only be used in small rooms for optimal performance. In larger spaces, you’ll either need multiple LV-H132s or you won’t feel a difference in the air quality at all.

9) GermGuardian AC5250PT Air Purifier
The GermGuardian AC5250PT is one of the heaviest-duty air purifiers for single-room use. This is a 5-stage, 5-speed device that clears out the air in a 193-square-foot room in a matter of hours. This unit’s CADR ratings for dust, pollen, and smoke are 123, 128, and 116 respectively.
The five-stage filtration process starts with a dual-function carbon pre-filter for large particles and odor elimination, and a True HEPA Filter for 99.97% effectiveness against particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. The fourth and fifth filtration stages include a germicidal UV-C light and a Pet Pure antimicrobial treatment film that covers the surface of the charcoal pre-filter. We’ve noticed that a lot of the filtration process relies on the thin charcoal filter, and as a result, the AC5250PT is not the best odor-ridding air purifier out there. As for getting rid of dust mites, smoke, and mold spores, this device works like a charm.
This GermGuardian air purifier has a maximum coverage capacity of 193 square feet, making it a worthy candidate for use in spacious living rooms and kitchens. With its five-speed fan presets, the AC5250PT would work splendidly in large rooms at its fourth and fifth speed, as well as in bedrooms on its first to third gear. Depending on how large of a room it’s in and how polluted the air is, you’ll want to adjust the fan setting for optimal air-cleaning performance manually.
So if you’re looking for a beast of an air purifier that’ll cleanse the air in a living room or other similarly sized room, the GermGuardian AC5250PT is a viable option.

7) Airthereal APH260 Air Purifier
The Airthereal APH260’s design may be simple, but what’s hiding under the case is a motor built for a tank. This air purifier has a maximum space coverage capacity of 355 square feet, making it one of the largest models on our list.
This Airthereal air purifier offers three-stage air filtration – a pre-filter, a True HEPA Filter, and a dedicated charcoal filter. The great thing about the charcoal filter is that, unlike the previous two models, this one works extremely well at eliminating odors. This device’s CADR ratings are at an astounding 150-plus in smoke, dust, and pollen.
The APH260 is equipped with a smart detector which automatically gauges the air quality of your room and switches to the appropriate fan speed. If you don’t have the time or energy to tinker around with the three speed presets, simply turn the machine on in auto mode and you’re good to go. There’s also a display which shows you the quality of the room’s air in real-time. The device will continue running at a higher speed until the indicator reaches a value of less than 20.
The droning sounds of an air purifier at night can reduce the quality of sleep. However, the APH260 has a sleep mode which keeps sound levels at a minimum (fan speed is significantly reduced), so you can get a good night’s sleep while the appliance runs in the background.
The compact, 10-pound APH260 from Airthereal is a great option if you have a larger home or room and would like a fuss-free air purifying experience.

6) GermGuardian AC4300 Air Purifier Review
The AC4300 from GermGuardian is one of the most versatile air purifiers on our list. Not only does it filter indoor air of dust mites and other invisible organisms with its True HEPA Filter, but it also comes with a pre-filter for trapping larger particles and a charcoal filter for eliminating cooking, tobacco, and pet odors. When the filters become too clogged, an LED indicator will alert you that it’s time to replace the filters (typically every 6 to 8 months).
This 22-inch, 3-speed air purifier has a maximum coverage area of 153 square feet, making it work best it small rooms like bedrooms and kitchens. The AC4300 has the power to filter a 153-square-foot room’s air up to four times every hour to ensure fresh, breathable air all day long.
With the UV-C mode activated, the AC4300 doesn’t just trap airborne pollutants, but it also kills any bacteria, mold, and dust mites in an instant. If your sinuses suffer during humid summer months, the AC4300’s germicidal rays will be of tremendous help in eliminating common airborne allergens. The CADR ratings – or the efficiency of eliminating common airborne pollutants – are 107 for dust, 116 for pollen, and 99 for smoke.
For the power-conscious buyers out there, you should know that the AC4300 is ENERGY STAR certified. Leaving the device running all day and night long will hardly cost you anything in electricity while also providing you and your loved ones with fresh, clean air.
All in all, this is an extremely versatile air purifier that makes sure you’re breathing in clean air in your bedroom or office.

5) Winix 5300-2 Air Purifier
Winix is arguably the most well-known manufacturer of high-quality, ultra-reliable air purifiers, and the 5300-2 is a testament to the company’s amazing engineering. This air purifier performs extremely well in large rooms of up to 360 square feet (CADR ratings of 243 for dust, 246 for pollen, and 232 for smoke).
The 5300-2 uses 3-stage filtration plus PlasmaWave ionizers to remove invisible particles like dust mites and odors at a speed of over 200 CFM.
The 3-stage filtration includes a permanent pre-filter (washable), a True HEPA Filter (99.97% effectiveness), and an odor-absorbing carbon filter. An optional ionizer can be turned on to get rid of any lingering odors. Oddly enough, the carbon filter works well at trapping most odors but seems to take a bit longer at for smoke.
This is one of the simpler air purifiers available on the market, so it doesn’t have a remote control feature. Instead, the 5300-2 has a built-in timer (1, 4, and 8 hours). It also features an air quality sensor which will kick-start the 5300-2 to life when it deems the air quality of a room is too polluted. On auto-mode, the fan’s speed will spin in accordance with how quickly the air purifier needs to clear the air. You can also choose sleep mode to keep the air purifier running with minimal sound output and dimmed LED lights.
On the 5300-2’s control panel, you will find both the air quality indicator and a filter indicator. Both help in reducing the amount of guesswork needed to keep the device running optimally, keeping your room as free of airborne pollutants as possible.

4) Hathaspace HSP-001 Air Purifier
The HSP-001 from Hathaspace is a smart air purifier that tackles airborne allergens in large rooms of up to 350 square feet. It comes with an auto-sensor that detects the air quality of a room and adjusts its fan speed accordingly. Using an air purifier has never been easier; simply plug it in, turn it on auto mode, and let it run all day and all night. With a CADR rating of 160 for dust, smoke, and pollen, this is one of the more impressive large-room air purifiers currently available.
This air purifier filters the air by passing it through a six-stage filtration process. The first line of defense is a Nano-cold catalyst filter that traps large particles and toxic fumes. The activated carbon filter gets rid of odors from gases, smoke, and pets (or people). An antibacterial filter then destroys any viruses and fungi that get suctioned into the device’s intake. Then the True HEPA Filter traps everything – dust mites, mold spores, pollen, and so on – with 99.97% effectiveness. There’s also an optional UV-C sterilizer that targets bacteria’s DNA, so they’re gone forever, and an ionizer (ozone production at .009 per million) gets rid of any lingering odors that the filter may have missed.
The whisper-quiet sleep mode will come in handy when the sun goes down. When sleep mode is activated, the device will operate at a quiet 18 decibels and turn all of its LEDs off, leaving your room in peaceful darkness while humming you to sleep.

3) Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier
On the surface, the 5300-2 and 5500-2 from Winix look similar. In fact, except for the darker hue of the 5500-2’s housing, they could be identical twins. But there’s one major component found in the 5500-2 that the 5300-2 does not offer.
In every other regard, the two Winix air purifiers the same. With this model, you get wide coverage of 360 square feet, the same high CADR ratings (243, 243, and 232 for dust, pollen, and smoke respectively), and the same 3-stage filtration plus a PlasmaWave ionizer.
The convenience features are alike – a built-in timer with 1, 4 and 8 hours presets; no remote control; auto-mode and sleep mode; and filter and air quality indicators. It’s a shame that a remote control wasn’t added to this more advanced model, but by no means a deal-breaker, especially considering its superior air-purifying ability.
The only thing that separates the 5500-2 from the 5300-2 is the presence of a washable AOC granular carbon filter that traps odors. Compared to the regular odor-absorbing carbon filter in the 5300-2, this more sophisticated, fine-mesh carbon sheet works much better at preventing cigarette and cooking odors from leaking back into the air.
However, you should know that the AOC granular carbon filter is not the best available in today’s market. Also, the 5500-2’s smart sensor seems to have a noticeable lag between detecting odors and starting the device to purify the air. This isn’t too bad since it does detect odors eventually and will work to remove the smell as effectively and efficiently as possible.

2) Blueair 211+ Air Purifier
The Blueair 211+ is perhaps the most surprising air purifier on our list. First of all, this unit does NOT come with a True HEPA Filter. For most, this would be a cause for worry, but in the 211+’s case, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. This unit’s filtration system 3-stage filtration system – two washable pre-filters and an odor-absorbing carbon filter – works exceedingly well at trapping even the smallest of particles. Sure, it’s not as effective against pet dander and pollen, but against dust mites, their eggs, and their waste, there’s no question that the 211+ is one of the best air purifiers out there.
The Blueair 211+ is also designed to filter the air in large rooms of up to 540 square feet, making it the second toughest air purifier on our list. And on top of being able to filter huge rooms by moving tremendous amounts of air (five times per hour), this device has astounding CADR ratings of 350 for smoke, pollen, and dust.
Performance is the 211+’s greatest selling point as it’s not exactly the most convenient air purifier to use. For instance, it doesn’t have a remote control, smart sensors, or an auto-mode. You’ll need to babysit the 211+ and guess when the room’s air has been properly filtered before shutting it off manually. And at 60 watts at its highest speed setting, it’s also not the most power-efficient purifier.
However, it’s important to note that a large air-filtration capacity does come with its costs. So even though the Blueair 211+ isn’t tailored for the energy-conscious among us, it does perform extremely well.

1) RabbitAir BioGS 2.0 SPA-550A Air Purifier
Finally, we have the amazing BioGS 2.0 SPA-550A – the toughest, most durable, and user-friendliest air purifier on our list. With a maximum area coverage of 550 square feet, there’s no doubt that the SPA-550A is built to filter the largest rooms of dirty airborne pollutants.
The SPA-550A delivers traditional 3-stage filtration, including a True HEPA Filter that lasts up to three years, but it also has an optional ionizer for removing lingering odors almost instantaneously. This unit comes with a remote control that gives you more control than the onboard control panel. The remote control gives you access to the optional ionizer, a sleep timer (1, 4, and 8 hours).
The SPA-550A also has a sleep timer which lets you choose between 1, 4, and 8 hours of continuous use before it shuts down automatically. However, this unit works flawlessly when left on auto-mode unless you’d like to deep-filter the air.
However, there is a pretty major downside of the SPA-550A, namely its less-than-impressive CADR ratings. With ratings of 149 for dust, 162 for pollen, and 135 for smoke, it won’t be too hard to find other models that promise cleaner air. Check out the previous air purifiers and you’ll see just how many can perform more effectively.
Overall, the RabbitAir SPA-550A is indeed a heavy-duty air purifier that’s built to filter large rooms, but it does require some time, even on turbo speed mode, to get the job done. Good thing this product is ENERGY STAR certified so you won’t spend an exorbitant amount of cash on utilities to keep this air purifier running around the clock.

Philips Air Purifier 2000i Series AC2889/41 Air Purifier Review
If you thought air purifiers couldn’t get more technological advanced, you’d be wrong. The AC2889/41 from Philips’ 2000i Series is one of the more advanced models out there with its Wi-Fi connectivity and a downloadable app to send real-time alerts to your mobile device wherever you are.
The AC2889/41 is constantly monitoring the indoor air quality of a room. You can find the indoor air index value on the device, or if you have it connected to your home’s Wi-Fi, you can see just how polluted or clean your air is right on your smart device’s display. With proprietary AeraSense Technology, the AC2889/41 will adjust its fan speed (3 different auto-cleaning modes) based on the environment of the room.
If you’d like more control over how the air purifier performs, switch the appliance back to manual mode and choose from five different cleaning speeds. The high speed – Turbo Speed mode – turns the fan at its highest speed, cleaning a 277-square-foot room up to three times every hour. What’s amazing is that this device has an extremely high CADR rating of over 200 for dust, pollen, and smoke.
This Philips air purifier cleans a room’s air using a simple 3-in-1 filtration process. Air passes through a fine-mesh pre-filter to capture large particles, then the second True HEPA Filter for 99.97% filtering effectiveness of small, 0.3-micron particles, and finally a dedicated charcoal filter to eliminate odors. However, none of these filters can absorb toxic fumes like CO gas, so this may not be the best air purifier to keep in your kitchen or garage workshop.
