In every other regard, the two Winix air purifiers the same. With this model, you get wide coverage of 360 square feet, the same high CADR ratings (243, 243, and 232 for dust, pollen, and smoke respectively), and the same 3-stage filtration plus a PlasmaWave ionizer.

The convenience features are alike – a built-in timer with 1, 4 and 8 hours presets; no remote control; auto-mode and sleep mode; and filter and air quality indicators. It’s a shame that a remote control wasn’t added to this more advanced model, but by no means a deal-breaker, especially considering its superior air-purifying ability.

The only thing that separates the 5500-2 from the 5300-2 is the presence of a washable AOC granular carbon filter that traps odors. Compared to the regular odor-absorbing carbon filter in the 5300-2, this more sophisticated, fine-mesh carbon sheet works much better at preventing cigarette and cooking odors from leaking back into the air.

However, you should know that the AOC granular carbon filter is not the best available in today’s market. Also, the 5500-2’s smart sensor seems to have a noticeable lag between detecting odors and starting the device to purify the air. This isn’t too bad since it does detect odors eventually and will work to remove the smell as effectively and efficiently as possible.

2) Blueair 211+ Air Purifier

The Blueair 211+ is perhaps the most surprising air purifier on our list. First of all, this unit does NOT come with a True HEPA Filter. For most, this would be a cause for worry, but in the 211+’s case, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. This unit’s filtration system 3-stage filtration system – two washable pre-filters and an odor-absorbing carbon filter – works exceedingly well at trapping even the smallest of particles. Sure, it’s not as effective against pet dander and pollen, but against dust mites, their eggs, and their waste, there’s no question that the 211+ is one of the best air purifiers out there.

The Blueair 211+ is also designed to filter the air in large rooms of up to 540 square feet, making it the second toughest air purifier on our list. And on top of being able to filter huge rooms by moving tremendous amounts of air (five times per hour), this device has astounding CADR ratings of 350 for smoke, pollen, and dust.

Performance is the 211+’s greatest selling point as it’s not exactly the most convenient air purifier to use. For instance, it doesn’t have a remote control, smart sensors, or an auto-mode. You’ll need to babysit the 211+ and guess when the room’s air has been properly filtered before shutting it off manually. And at 60 watts at its highest speed setting, it’s also not the most power-efficient purifier.

However, it’s important to note that a large air-filtration capacity does come with its costs. So even though the Blueair 211+ isn’t tailored for the energy-conscious among us, it does perform extremely well.

The SPA-550A delivers traditional 3-stage filtration, including a True HEPA Filter that lasts up to three years, but it also has an optional ionizer for removing lingering odors almost instantaneously. This unit comes with a remote control that gives you more control than the onboard control panel. The remote control gives you access to the optional ionizer, a sleep timer (1, 4, and 8 hours).

The SPA-550A also has a sleep timer which lets you choose between 1, 4, and 8 hours of continuous use before it shuts down automatically. However, this unit works flawlessly when left on auto-mode unless you’d like to deep-filter the air.

However, there is a pretty major downside of the SPA-550A, namely its less-than-impressive CADR ratings. With ratings of 149 for dust, 162 for pollen, and 135 for smoke, it won’t be too hard to find other models that promise cleaner air. Check out the previous air purifiers and you’ll see just how many can perform more effectively.

Overall, the RabbitAir SPA-550A is indeed a heavy-duty air purifier that’s built to filter large rooms, but it does require some time, even on turbo speed mode, to get the job done. Good thing this product is ENERGY STAR certified so you won’t spend an exorbitant amount of cash on utilities to keep this air purifier running around the clock.
